Avanti takes over Virgin line
5th January 2020
As you may have read in recent news Avanti West Coast has taken over the UK’s busiest intercity line.
Avanti West Coast is a joint venture between First Group of Aberdeen and the Italian state rail operator, Trenitalia.
For 22 years, Virgin Trains has been running the West Coast main line connecting London with Birmingham, Chester, Liverpool, Manchester, North Wales and Scotland. Virgin was barred from bidding to continue to run the franchise because it refused to take on the unpredictable pension funding.
Avanti West plans to refurbish all 56 trains with upgraded Wifi and improved catering. The diesel Voyager trains will be replaced. They plan to add 263 more weekly services within three years to destinations including Walsall, Gobowen and Llandudno.
