Corporate Traveller Tips: With its 3 main airports positioned in and around, New York provides corporate travellers with a wide choice of arrival and departure points.  In part one of Flightline Travel Management’s a New York Airport Guide we explored the options corporate travellers have when deciding how to best get to New York City, with the focus on JFK airport, New York’s largest and busiest hub for international flights. Part two, of this corporate travel guide offers tips for travelling to the city from Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR).

Among coffee bars, dozens of shops, restaurants and other services, as also massage bars, you should find the right facility to meet your needs at both airports. In public areas in most terminals, Wi-Fi is available, provided by Boingo Wireless Company. You can get online around the ticket counters, designated work stations, food courts and boarding gates. You can use your existing Wi-Fi account or choose an option of the following: 1. Pay as you go (per hour): $4.95 (£3.01, €3.77); 2. Day Pass (unlimited access for a 24-hour period): $7.95 (£4.83, €6.05); 3. Unlimited Access (monthly subscription with unlimited access at more than 100,000 hotspots worldwide): $9.95 (£6.04, €7.58).

Corporate travellers can access currency exchange services and ATMs at all three terminals at Newark, provided by Travelex or Currency.

Travel from/to Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR)

Newark Liberty International Airport, in Newark, New Jersey, handles both international and domestic flights from more than 30 airlines. The airport is located a bit further away from New York City than the other two airports, but it has more modern facilities and is less crowded than JFK and LGA airports. Located on the New Jersey Turnpike (Interstate 95), Newark Airport offers a wide choice of options for getting to your business travel destination, such as travel by AirTrain, rent a car, or use a van service.

AirTrain Newark offers you speedy access to New Jersey Transit trains into Newark, New York City and other destinations, also connecting to the Amtrak’s national rail network and the NJ TRANSIT. It is a low-cost, low-stress and low-impact travel option. It operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and also provides connections within the airport area, such as between terminals or to rental car facilities. You can find more information about the pricing here. Here you can find specific information about connections between Newark and JFK or LaGuardia here. You need to calculate between an hour and one and a half hours to reach JFK or LaGuardia, depending on traffic if you choose to go via road. Driving to the city takes about 20-45 minutes, and you need to keep in mind that there are tolls depending on your travel route. Leisure and corporate travellers can choose from a number of leading car rental suppliers, such as Advantage, Budget, Hertz, Payless, Alamo, Dollar, National, Thrifty, Avis and Enterprise. Simply get in touch with your business travel company to check the availability, make reservations or get advice on costs for car rental. Additionally, don’t forget to check with your rental car agency and/or your TMC regarding the car rentals company policy for paying tolls. Some rental car companies offer a so-called E-ZPass® transponder tag. So make sure you are clear about whether your car rental fee includes this or whether additional fees apply. Your chosen car rental supplier does not provide an E-ZPass® transponder tag? You don’t want to use a rental car company tag? No worries, you can just pay the toll in cash. If you are using your personal E-ZPass® transponder, ensure you don’t add the rental car’s licence plate.

Travellers who prefer to use a taxi, be aware of the following safety tip, given by the Port Authority New York and New Jersey: “Ignore offers of transportation from solicitors in the terminal. Soliciting of ground transportation is illegal, and many illegal solicitors are unlicensed and uninsured. To obtain ground transportation information, please visit the Port Authority Welcome Center located in the arrivals area of each terminal, where uniformed staff will be happy to assist you. Ignore non-uniformed people offering to assist with baggage. Seek out uniformed porters or airline employees for baggage assistance”. Taxis take between 20 and 45 minutes to go to the city. They cost about $13 (£8.13, €10.41) to move between terminals, about $85 (£53.17, €68.08) to go to JFK Airport and about $87 (£54.42, €69.69) going to LaGuardia Airport. To New York City, the price would be between $50 (£31.28, €40.05) and $70 (£43.79, €56.07), depending on where exactly you will go. Indicated prices exclude bridge tolls (these are an additional $10 (£6.26, €8.01)). Group Travel Rates are available and depend on the number of passengers. Taxis are cash only. Make sure to hail a cab in the designated areas or ask a uniformed airport employee to help you. It’s polite to tip at least a dollar per bag if the taxi driver assists you.

Bus and van services may be another option that business travel agents suggest. Newark Airport Express offers a convenient express bus service between the airport and New York City within 45 minutes to an hour. The one-way fare is $16 (£10.01, €12.82), and a round trip is $28 (£17.52, €22.43). Every 15 minutes a bus is leaving from each stop during the day, 365 days a year, and it stops at Newark Liberty Airport (terminals A, B, and C), Port Authority Bus Terminal (41st Street between 8th Avenue and 9th Avenue), Bryant Park (NW corner of 42nd Street and 5th Avenue) and Grand Central (120 East 41st between Park and Lex avenues). Tickets cannot be bought from the bus drivers, only online.

Hotels
At the airport there is the Newark Liberty Marriott. However, further nearby options are available, such as the Best Western, Courtyard by Marriott, Ecno Lodge, Holiday Inn, Howard Johnson and Sheraton. For a full list, including details click here. Some of them also include conferencing facilities and meeting space.
